Understanding Your CBC Report

A CBC (Complete Blood Count) is one of the most common blood tests in India. It counts the different cells in your blood. This page explains what each part means in simple words.

What a CBC measures

A CBC looks at three main things: red blood cells (which carry oxygen), white blood cells (which fight infection), and platelets (which help blood clot). Your report lists each value next to a reference range printed by your lab.

Hemoglobin (Hb)

Hemoglobin carries oxygen around your body. Typical adult ranges are roughly 13–17 g/dL for men and 12–15 g/dL for women. A value below the typical range is often linked to anemia, which is common in India, especially in women. A doctor can tell you what your value means for you.

White blood cells (WBC / TLC)

White blood cells help your body fight infection. A higher count is often seen with an infection, and a lower count can have several causes. Your report may also list a differential — the breakdown of each type of white cell.

Platelets

Platelets help your blood clot. On Indian reports this is sometimes written in lakhs. A low platelet count gets attention because it can be linked to conditions like dengue, but many causes are harmless — a doctor will look at it in context.

RBC indices (MCV, MCH, MCHC)

These describe the size and content of your red cells. They help a doctor understand the type of anemia if hemoglobin is low. You do not need to interpret these yourself — they are clues your doctor uses together.
