Understanding Your Liver Function Report

A liver function test (LFT) checks how your liver is doing. On Indian reports the main enzymes are usually written as SGPT and SGOT. This page explains them in simple words.

SGPT and SGOT

SGPT and SGOT (you may also see them as ALT and AST) are enzymes measured in U/L. A value above the typical range can reflect liver stress. Fatty liver, which is very common in India, is one common reason a doctor might look into.

Bilirubin

Bilirubin is measured in mg/dL and reported as total and direct. A higher bilirubin is linked with jaundice. As always, a doctor interprets what your value means for you.

Proteins and albumin

LFT reports often include total protein, albumin and alkaline phosphatase. These give the doctor a fuller view of liver health. You do not need to interpret each one yourself.

Questions you could ask your doctor

  • Are my SGPT and SGOT in a healthy range for me?
  • Could diet or lifestyle be affecting these values?
  • Do I need any follow-up test or scan?
